I shot and planned this post nearly two months ago when you could still just about get away with bare legs and now I’m not sure if you can really even wear cycling shorts again until April but let’s get this up none the less for the courageous ones of you who will brave the cold in cycling shorts, or the ones who will just wear them inside the house with the heating whacked up.
Cycling shorts were one of those ~trendzZzzZ~ I saw about for ages and didn’t think looked great until one day something just switched in my head, I envisioned a potential outfit involving cycling shorts that I’d love to wear, I bought a pair and I never looked back. I can’t bloody stop wearing them, comfort is key 🔑🔑🔑 and all that x
So even though it’s fucking freezing outside most days now, I’m gonna show you how I’ve been styling mine so you can take some hashtag inspo for both in and out of the house. Obvs since shooting these I’ve had some new additions in my wardrobe that I’ve been wearing with the cycling shorts and loving just as much as the photographed bits so I’ll try to chuck those in at some points in the post too.
I’ll just say now that the cycling shorts in question are from Pretty Little Thing so that I don’t have to link the same thing under every pic but I also have a pair from Missguided in grey (though I prefer the PLT fit) and I rly recommend Topshop for them because they have tons of different textures and fabrics that they make them in.
Enjoy and pls stay warm it’s too cold for this lol x
the outfit that was the reason i bought cycling shorts in the first place
This was the outfit I envisioned that made me want to buy and wear cycling shorts. It was actually the subject of this tweet, though I don’t think I ever actually used that caption when posting one of these pics to the ‘gram. Maybe next upload?
I’m a bit obsessed with pairing an oversized shirt with cycling shorts, think it’s my fave choice of top style to go with these shorts. I have my trusty old white chambray shirt from Topshop that has been on this blog before that I also love with it, and I also love the idea of playing with different fabrics and going for a satin or denim shirt too.
i really like fleeces this autumn, so this outfit was born
Ok so just to clarify, I think I do a thing where I call sweatshirts that have a half-zip a fleece even though it’s not actually a fleece? Also I’ve still seen this at Brandy Melville in store but not online, and also it’s always a good idea to check Depop for older Brandy stock because so many people sell their older stuff from the last couple years, that’s how I’ve got some things that disappeared off the official website too fast for me to get them from there.
Since shooting these pics I’ve gotten two new fleeces (which are actually like proper fleeces lol) that I am so head over heels in love with and wear with these shorts more than I wear this Brandy one. This one from Urban Outfitters and this one from Adidas (which I can’t find on Adidas anymore so linked via UO) are my two new faves that I wear all the time now, not just with cycling shorts but like they look rlllyyyy good with cycling shorts too.
can’t go wrong with a classic white t shirt and denim jacket combo
This is one of those outfits where I took some pieces I love wearing every damn day with any outfit and put them with the cycling shorts. It’s a nice lil twist on the classic black jeans and white t shirt combo because instead you’re wearing some cotton shorts that cut off halfway down your thigh. Variety x
This denim jacket is my bestest friend in my whole entire wardrobe and one of my most favourite purchases this whole year. I also looovvveeee the Topshop skyline t shirts at the moment, there’s a few different colours and cities available, but I just think they’re a really nice fit and cut, and the subtle lil embroidery adds something to an otherwise plain top.
the jumper i wear every single day of my life and have done for over a year so, naturally, also needed to wear with these cycling shorts
I spoke about this jumper in a previous Instagram caption. I wear this jumper around the house with underwear basically every day of my life – I put it on first thing in the morning and usually change back into it at night. One of the things I love about cycling shorts are that they’re just as comfy as only wearing underwear, so it suddenly turns your at home jumper-and-underwear outfit into an outfit that is socially acceptable to leave the house and go out in public in, without losing any of the comfort. Probably the best reason I can think of for wearing cycling shorts which, ykno, is a pretty good one in my books.
another jumper but this time it’s cropped because ~variety~
I love this jumper so much I want it in every single colour. My fave way to wear it is like this, a bit more ~comfy casual~ so with cycling shorts or leggings. It’s a good ~off duty~ outfit and pretty nice to throw on when you’re going to the gym.
If you’d prefer something a bit more cropped this is sorta the alternative outfit to the Brandy Melville jumper one above, and you know I need all the crop I can get because I’m like 5’2 so anything not crop will end up being longer on me than the actual cycling shorts are. rip x
PS I am aware the second pic makes me look like I have jaundice, the camera photographed my face really yellow up close and I’m not rly sure why and this is the best I can counteract it with editing lol soz.
Anyway there ya have it, that’s how I’m styling a trend that I’m 1. really late on 2. really not cool enough for and 3. really not being seasonally appropriate about.
Hope you enjoyed this slightly diff style of post, reminds me of this old stuff I used to do hahahahaha.
